Befriending The Body

“And I said to my body, softly,

‘I want to be your friend.’

It took a long breath and replied,

‘I’ve been waiting my whole life for this’.”

– Nayyirah Waheed

Our relationship with our body is one of the most important relationships we will ever have. Connection to our body allows us to listen to and respond to our needs, relate to others, protect ourselves and fully experience our aliveness.

However, many of us have experienced disruption in our connection to our body (known as disembodiment), perhaps due to societal norms, objectification, oppression, trauma, emotional or physical pain, stress, injury or other experiences.

When disembodied, we may live in our head, be overly critical, experience body shame, engage in disordered eating, be ruled by a disregulated nervous system, or ignore our needs and autonomy.

“Befriending The Body” is a gentle 6-week process intended to support you in beginning to rebuild a healthy relationship to your body. Through somatic work, art and expressive arts therapies, deep inquiry and sharing, we will seek to invite embodiment, in order to cultivate connection, attunement and compassion to the home you live in.

“Being in the Befriending the Body group was such a gift. It was a warm and safe space to get to know a group of beautiful humans while also getting to better know myself and my body. The group brought me so much self awareness and growth – it deepened my understanding of my body and its needs, strengthened my body’s voice and also my ability to listen to that voice, and resourced me in the ways in which I can honour and take care of my body and myself. It helped me see my body as my self, and my self as my body – all worthy of love and respect and care. My connection to my body has never been stronger. The group helped open my eyes to how much my body has done for me, how much it’s gone through alongside me, and how it’s really never given up on me. I see now that my body has always been my friend, and I truly feel like I am now ready to become the friend my body deserves.”
