Meet Kellsey

My Role with This Human Thing

I facilitate groups, workshops + yoga classes under the role of a registered psychologist, art therapist and yoga teacher.

I am also the person behind the scenes as the ‘mother’ of This Human Thing (answering e-mails, designing/running the website, creating content, managing bookings, etc.)

I am passionate about creating and holding space for deep and transformative work – which has led me to create This Human Thing

My Approach to My Work:

I address mental health through a holistic lens, + seek to bring awareness to psychological, emotional, physical, creative, spiritual, intellectual + social needs in order to facilitate growth + healing.

My therapeutic work is influenced by several different  approaches, and would say I work from primarily humanistic, existential, psychodynamic and depth-oriented paradigms.

Why I Do It?

I am passionate about supporting others to connect with their innate healing intelligence. It is my deepest honour to sit with others as they heal and grow from pain, conditioning and trauma, so that they can connect more deeply, authentically and joyfully to life, others and themselves.

How Can You Work With Me?

You can work with me within This Human Thing by attending one of our groups, workshops + yoga classes. Read more about upcoming offerings here.

Outside of This Human Thing, I offer 1-on-1 therapy services through my private practice Fellow Travellers Integrative Therapy (waitlist only).

My name is Kellsey Calhoon (she/her). I am a cisgender woman of Irish, English, French and Polish descent, living on Treaty 4 territory in Regina, Saskatchewan.

I know myself to be a dynamic person. I love the lighter side of life, gravitating toward the humour, playfulness, gratitude and ridiculousness found in simple moments. Yet I also long for depth: the deep conversations, the heavy emotions, the great unknowns of the psyche and universe.

My life is guided by core values of connection, freedom/agency, authenticity, curiosity, responsibility & impact.

For those who speak the lingo, I am an INFJ, a Pisces Sun, Aquarius Moon + Capricorn Rising, and my love language is food. Outside of the therapy office, you could expect to find me spending time with loved ones, wandering in nature, snuggling my pets, reading, trying to keep plants alive, moving my body in some way, working on This Human Thing, seeking an adventure or having an existential crisis.

My Path

If I’m being honest, I think a part of the reason I originally headed down the path of becoming a psychologist is because I was told I would be “good” at it. I was known to be “good” at listening, understanding, caring and helping. I was hard-working and driven.

My gift of supporting others to heal and grow was tangled up with my own conditioning and wounding. I felt worthy if I could help others or if I was achieving something. And I felt comfortable only if others were comfortable. This made me feel accepted and safe.

My own healing journey started before I knew it did: through the body. Sports, movement and time in nature played a key role in my own overall wellness as a child and teen. I see now how physical exercise supported my family in dealing with stress and trauma, allowing for a sense of embodiment, connection and calm to return in stormy times. Body-based practices have always been supportive for me and allowed me to return to a sense of ‘home’ within myself.

In my 20s, I began to learn how to become aware of and work with my mind, through personal therapy, yoga, meditation & education. I started to become unhooked from core beliefs and unconscious & conditioned ways of thinking.

School mirrored this as I moved from kinesiology into psychology, with a vested interest on learning more about the connection between mind and body. My Masters research explored the way that therapeutic lifestyle changes could support mental health.

Eventually, the combination of this deepened mind-body awareness played a role in opening me up to a numinous experience, which I would describe as a spiritual awakening.  It was one of the most profound experiences of my life and took my healing journey and consciousness to a new level.

This experience also became a spiritual emergency, due in part because of my own lack of awareness of what I was experiencing (and therefore inability to truly advocate for myself), as well as the medical system’s lack of understanding of what I was experiencing. I was able to experience firsthand how unequipped our health system can be in holding space for the dynamic and whole nature of the human experience.  I felt de-humanized and unseen.

My experiences of healing through body, mind and spirit have reconnected me to the core of who I am. I am able to make choices more consciously and am able to understand and show up for myself in new ways.  I am more awake to life and am more resourced to move through life’s challenges.

By turning inward, I have been able to return back out with more vitality.

Further, this path has deepened my ability to understand and hold space for others in the midst of deep pain, suffering or complexity. My personal and professional experiences have provided me with a wide range of practices that support mental health and overall wellbeing.

So now, I choose to be of service within the role of a registered psychologist, art therapist and yoga teacher in a more conscious way. I seek to guide others to connect to their own innate healing wisdom by offering support and holding space, and enhance my ability to do this by continuing to do my own deep discovery and healing work.
